Christmas Gift Shopping

Emma Hogan 18 December 2018

5 shopping days to go! Are you panicking yet?

With online shopping in time for Christmas Day now limited to the few retailers who’ll deliver over the weekend (Amazon, we’re looking at you), the panic is starting to set in.

This is where our High Street comes into it’s own. Yes, it’s manic, yes it’s hard to find the perfect gift as we trudge from store to store, but getting that gift in your hands, with no need to wait by the door for the poor postie, is the most satisfying end to a last minute Christmas shopping trip.

As usual, retailers have gone all out to fill shop windows with glistening fairy lights and potential Christmas Gifts to encourage us to spend, spend, spend. Whether we’re splashing our cash on the latest technology goods or searching department stores for that one special gift, Christmas is a time for splashing out where we can. We’re emptying our piggy banks and eking out the last of the sellotape to get everything ready for the big day.

How manic will our shopping centers be this week?

We investigated what what our High Street will look like this week – take a look at the highlights:

  • Nationwide, gift buyers spend an average of £177 on gifts for each child (in North East England this increased to a generous £219)
    • In Toy stores / departments you’ll likely feel like a sardine.
  • An estimated 10.1 million shoppers are expected to hit the high street this Saturday spend a total of £1.38 billion on gifts.
    • The high street will be heaving with shoppers looking for their last gifts – be prepared with your shopper elbows!
  • At least 50% of shoppers are expected to visit a local shopping centre this weekend.
    • Leave your car and the stress of parking at home if you can, try public transport if you’re heading to a shopping centre this week
  • 28% of shoppers will use online retailers’ express delivery options this week
    • Pay a bit more and shop from the comfort of your sofa with retailers who can still offer guaranteed Christmas express delivery (Amazon, Argos etc.)
